University 106 Tasks to complete before 2/10

Remember we are not meeting in-person next week (2/3), however you still owe me 50 minutes of your time in lieu of spending time in the classroom ;)

So here are your tasks to be completed by our next class meeting either Weds 2/10 or Thursday 2/11 depending on your class meeting day.
1. Complete the University Pre-test. This should take only few minutes and will be used to measure your "growth" during the semester regarding research and library resources. You can access the pre-test here: http://bit.ly/7lUFTB (3 minutes)
2. Watch this video online Information Literacy: The Perils of Online Research: http://tinyurl.com/yj8hn9d (21 minutes)
EMAIL ME WHEN YOU HAVE WATCHED THIS VIDEO AND BRIEFLY ANSWER THESE PROMPTS (only a short paragraph for each):
1. GIVE TWO EXAMPLES OF A NON-CREDITABLE SOURCE AND WHY
2. WHAT IS INFORMATION LITERACY TO YOU?
3. Complete your ethnographic study of the library! An ethnography is research technique drawn from Anthropology and the Social Sciences where you observe a culture, place, or group of people. To prepare you to observe the space you have chosen in the library watch this short video (8 minutes): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCRRXNf_jYA&feature=player_embedded
The video also a good primer about taking notes in classes.

Then go to library and observe what is going on. Write down what you see based on the prompts from worksheet (available on course website). You can use the double entry technique described in the video but it is not required. Be creative. You can take pictures, draw diagrams, make a video, whatever use your imagination. Spend about 18 minutes in the library doing this.

So here is the breakdown of the 50 minute class period.
3 minutes (pre-test) + 21 minutes (info lit video) + 8 minutes (Observation video) + 18 minutes (ethnography) = 50 minutes.

Have fun!

History Detectives Assignment

Greetings,
Your first assignment (counts toward class participation), is to watch a segment of the History Detectives. You can find a copy of the worksheet for the assignment on the class website from this link:

https://sites.google.com/a/u.boisestate.edu/u106w/assignments/history-detectives-exercises

Instructions:
Please go to the History Detectives website that contains full episodes (http://video.pbs.org/program/1138014438). Watch one of the investigations from Season 6 or 7. You don't need to watch a whole episode just one segment (approximately 15-17 minutes) where they handle a research case from beginning to end. You will have to select one of the full episodes and navigate to the chapter that contains the investigation of interest to you. For this assignment, DO NOT use the web extra segments. This assignment is due by the next class.

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to get you to begin to think broadly and imaginatively about the research process as well as reflect on what the term 'research' embodies

Welcome to University 106

Hello and welcome to University 1o6: Library Research. In this class we will explore the research process, library resources, and evaluation criteria for good information. I hope to make this class relevant to your needs as students, researchers, and to your upcoming career choice (whatever that may be). The success of this class rests as much on you the student as me the instructor. So please contribute to your own learning and the learning of your classmates by participating in class.

Have a great semester.
